Feature Story
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY CRISPY FOOD IS SO SATISFYING?
Have you ever wondered why crispy food is so satisfying?
Turns out, we don’t just taste food. We listen to it.
Researchers Massimiliano Zampini and Charles Spence at Oxford tested what happened when they changed the sound people heard while biting potato chips.
When the crunch was made louder, or certain high-frequency sounds were amplified, participants rated the exact same chips as crisper and fresher. The research was published in the Journal of Sensory Studies.
It’s a fascinating example of how much more goes into experiencing food than simply flavor.
Our brains are taking in taste, smell, texture, appearance, and even sound with every bite.
It may also help explain why we love contrasting textures so much: creamy yogurt with crunchy granola, soft bread with a crisp crust, or silky pasta finished with toasted nuts.
So next time a meal feels like it’s missing something, you might not need another sauce or seasoning.
Maybe it just needs a little crunch.
