But, what's really in that store-bought loaf? A recent study found that a whopping 83% of "sourdough" breads sold in supermarkets contain extra ingredients like yeast, emulsifiers, and even preservativesā€¦yuckk!

So much for authenticity, right?

The sourdough market is booming, and it seems everyone wants a slice of this "health halo." But let's get realā€”authenticity matters. If you're on the hunt for genuine sourdough, make sure to check the ingredients. It should only contain flour, salt, and water, along with a natural starter.

It's a common issue for many people that makes your feet, ankles, and hands swell up like a balloon. šŸŽˆ It can also be incredibly dangerous if left untreated, my Gran learned this the hard way a few years ago (Sheā€™s all safe and sound now though).

From hormonal changes to lack of exercise, the causes of edema are as varied as your Netflix watchlist. Sometimes it's a symptom of a serious medical condition, but often it's just a lifestyle issue that can be managed.

Cut the Salt: Sodium is the frenemy of fluid balance. It loves water so much that it makes your body hold onto it. But the science is mixedā€”some people may be more salt-sensitive than others.

Crazy Good Chocolate Chip Cookies (Plant-Based & GF)

Who doesnā€™t love cookies? Not my nephews and nieces thatā€™s for sure! This weekend, instead of buying those store-bought cookies filled with who knows what, why not try whipping up a delicious gluten-free batch instead?

Ingredients:

  • 275g almond flour

  • 250g light brown sugar

  • 120ml coconut milk

  • 125g cold coconut oil

  • 1 tsp. baking powder

  • Ā¼ tsp. bicarbonate soda

  • 150g vegan dark chocolate chips

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 50g toasted coconut flakes (optional)

  • Ā½ tsp. flakey salt

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the coconut oil and light brown sugar. Whisk until the mixture becomes light and fluffy.

  2. Add the flour, baking powder, coconut milk, bicarbonate of soda, flakey sea salt, and vanilla to the bowl and mix together until a cookie dough texture forms.

  3. Cover and chill the cookie dough in the fridge for a minimum of two hours before baking. The dough can be kept in the fridge for up to four days.

  4. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 180ĀŗC/350ĀŗF. Line two baking trays with parchment paper, roll golf ball-sized pieces, and place them on the tray, making sure to leave room for expansion. Flatten the cookie balls slightly with the back of a spoon, and sprinkle with flakey salt and flaked coconut at this point (both optional).

  5. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 12-15 minutes, rotating the trays halfway through baking. When ready, remove and transfer to a cooling rack for the sugar to cool, and a crisp chewy cookie to form.

Enjoy warm, or store in a tight lock container for up to 3 days.
