Are You Missing Challah Bread?
Make your own gluten-free Challah today!
I first tried challah bread as a young teenager, and remember feeling drawn to the beauty of the braided loaf. There was something about the shiny exterior and braided texture that made the bread more aesthetically appealing. And I love how it tears!
Some quick history behind this wonderful bread:
Challah is a traditional Jewish braided bread, rich in history and symbolism. Its roots trace back to ancient Jewish customs, where “challah” referred to the portion of dough set aside as an offering to the priests in biblical times.
Today, challah is most commonly associated with Shabbat and Jewish holidays, where its golden, glossy loaves grace dinner tables as a symbol of sustenance, celebration, and spiritual connection.
Typically made with eggs, oil, flour, water, and a touch of sugar, challah is slightly sweet and has a soft, rich crumb. The braided design is not just decorative—it symbolizes love, unity, and the intertwining of spiritual and earthly realms. Round challahs are baked for Rosh Hashanah to represent the cyclical nature of the year.
An interesting fact: sprinkling sesame or poppy seeds on challah symbolizes manna, the miraculous food that sustained the Israelites in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt.
Making gluten-free challah is actually a bit more difficult than you might expect, as the individual strands of dough can have a tendency to “crack” during the proofing and baking stages.
But we’ve cracked the code and figured it out!
This challah has all the softness, golden color, and beautiful braiding of traditional challah, but it’s made with a custom gluten-free blend.
Enriched with egg yolks, olive oil, and just the right balance of psyllium husk for structure, this is a showstopper bread for any celebration.
