Golden Mornings & Liquid Gold

An Essay from Sedgefield, South Africa

Have you ever harvested your own honey?

There’s something deeply rewarding about living close to the rhythms of nature — and some days, that connection feels especially sweet.

This morning, I found myself up at our family farm, tucked into the hills just outside Sedgefield, where our small bee hives hum with quiet purpose. This season, the honey is flowing like a golden river — rich, pure, and alive with the flavour of wildflowers and fynbos. My husband, who is also our devoted beekeeper, has been gently harvesting from each hive, always leaving enough behind to feed the bees through the changing seasons.

What I admire most is the way he treats them — not as producers, but as part of the ecosystem we’re lucky to care for. He ensures their safety, plants a feast of pollen-rich flowers, and creates little watering holes so they can rest and hydrate during the heat of the day. It’s a quiet, respectful partnership — and the bees reward us with their golden gift.

When we tasted the first jar, it was everything you hope honey will be: sweet but not cloying, light on the tongue, with a golden hue that looked as if the sun itself had melted into the jar. It felt almost sacred — and yes, we were hungry — so we honoured it the best way we know how: spooned over thick, warm slices of our favourite Saturday sourdough.

As I savoured each bite, I found myself wishing I could bottle up this moment and share it with every Bloom Healthy customer. A reminder that the simple things — lovingly made and shared — are often the most nourishing of all.

If that image speaks to you, why not start your own ritual with our Bloom Healthy Sourdough Starter Kit? There’s something magical about baking your own loaf, watching it rise, and filling your kitchen with the smell of comfort and care.

Simple, real, and entirely satisfying. The kind of meal that fills more than just your hunger.

And just when I thought the day had revealed all its gifts, something unexpected happened — a quiet moment that reminded me how wild and wonderful life out here can be.

But that’s a story for next time…

Thought for the day:
"The real wealth of life lies in the little things — the warmth of the sun, the sweetness of honey, and the love we share."
