Secret Gut-Friendly Yogurt Lassi

Including Some Fun Lassi Flavor Combinations!

Gut-Friendly Lassi!

I’ve had to deal with a few gastrointestinal issues my whole life. Over the years, I’ve learned to adjust what goes into my body, and how it affects my gut.

While I live a balanced lifestyle and have a great relationship with food, my gut microbiome has been acting out lately!

Luckily, our website for members offers a wide range of useful, fermentation-friendly cookbooks and guides, including resources and recipes to help you start your fermentation journey today!

I don’t know about you, but all the winter months feel like a series of tests of self-control. You see, my typically rock-hard resolve is easily shattered by all the Christmas treats and winter sweets. So yes, I’ve fallen into the very cliché I’ve always pointed a finger at: “New year, new diet.”

The one good thing to come of it is that amid the recent digestive discomfort, I’ve reconnected with my appreciation for Ayurveda’s principles. And that’s how “Lassi” has made its comeback into my routine.

But being the fermentation nerd that I am, my version comes with a little tangy tweak.

So what’s the big SECRET?

I use fermented, gut-friendly MILK KEFIR in my lassi to enhance its nutritional and gut-healing properties.

Don’t get me wrong; yogurt is fantastic, but kefir in your lassi? That’s gut-healing magic on steroids!

What is Kefir

Kefir is one of the richest sources of bioactive compounds and good bacteria—so much so that it’s earned a status as one of the "superfoods" of our century!

This fermented milk drink is made using starter "grains," which are basically a combination of bacteria and yeast. The consistency is similar to yogurt but slightly thinner, making it more suitable for drinking.

Taste-wise, kefir is tart and tangy due to the fermentation process.

You’ll find all the information you need, as well as thorough step-by-step instructions for making dairy milk kefir with kefir grains, available here in our list of cookbooks on our website for members!

What is Lassi

Lassi is a quintessential yogurt-based drink in Indian culture. It comes in two varieties—sweet & salty. Imagine a smoothie, but with a rich cultural heritage and a dash of ancient medicine wisdom!

According to Ayurvedic principles, lassi balances the body’s doshas, particularly Vata and Pitta, making it a holistic remedy for digestive woes.

If you’re looking to improve your digestive strength, cleanse your gut, de-bloat, or even sleep better, lassi is an amazing drink to add into your rotation!

Lassi Flavor Combinations

I’m not claiming these are authentic recipes, by any means. But they are certainly delicious and packed with vitamin-rich goodness! I also find that having fun in the kitchen and experimenting with ingredients is a powerful way of really connecting with the food you make and consume.

These are my current favorite kefir lassi preparations. Start off with your homemade kefir recipe and either blend in fresh or frozen fruit, depending on the texture you’re looking for, or simply stir everything in. If using fruit, however, I recommend using it straight away for maximum benefits!

Sweet Variations:

I opt for stevia as my choice of sweetener. Just a few drops are enough to my liking, but you’ll need to taste test for yourself. Monk fruit is also a great natural alternative. If your fruits are perfectly ripe and sweet already, or if you’re using dried fruit, you may not even need to add anything at all.

Saffron and Cardamom:

Bloom a few saffron threads, then simply combine it with the kefir and a couple of crushed cardamom seeds.

Mango and Coconut:

Combine frozen mango chunks, coconut water, and kefir and blend until a golden-hued, ultra-creamy concoction comes to life.

Ginger and Mint:

Simply grate some fresh ginger and thinly slice ribbons of mint leaves straight into your cup of milk kefir. Stir and enjoy!

Orange Blossom Water and Dried Apricots:

Put 6 to 8 apricots in hot water and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes to soften. Then add it to a blender with a cup of kefir and a teaspoon of orange blossom water and blend until smooth.

Salty Variations:

This is considered the “healthiest” version of lassi, as it does not contain any added sugar. Some people also find it lighter and easier to digest. I’m partial to ice cubes for an ultra-refreshing drink, although that’s kind of a hot take, as it is typically recommended to consume it at room temperature.

The most traditional salted lassi ingredient is roasted cumin seed. It adds a wonderful flavor and I always include it in all of my three current rotational salted lassi recipes!

To make these, you only need to stir in the ingredients with your milk kefir! Finely chop some fresh herbs, make sure your toasted spices are cooled before combining them in, and always add a pinch of salt. That’s it!

Here are a few unique flavor combinations I’ve explored recently:

  • Lemon and Coriander

  • Garam Masala and Jalapeño

  • Turmeric and Mint Chutney
