US Adults Eat a Meals Worth of Calories in Snacks Everyday
Does this surprise us? Not really…
Results from a recent survey estimated that adults were consuming an average of roughly 400-500 calories worth of snacks daily!
This adds up to the equivalent of roughly one meal per day, just in snacks!
In fact, snacks accounted for roughly 1/3 of the daily added sugar intake among adults included in the sample.
It goes without saying, swapping out processed snack foods with some whole fruits and mixed nuts and seeds is always the best route!
But, it’s easier said than done. Which is why I’m giving you a FREE and amazing recipe below, keep reading on below for an incredible mixed nuts recipe inspired by a friend’s visit to Yotam Ottolenghi’s restaurant. My friend tried to make them at home, and then I went home and made a batch. The recipe does have a bit of added sugar, which you can omit if you are trying to be more well-behaved.

FREE RECIPE: Spicy Mixed Nuts with Nigella Seeds and Cayenne Pepper!
I heard about this recipe from a friend who was traveling in London and ate at Yotam Ottolenghi’s restaurant where they served a version of these as pre-dinner snacks. My buddy subsequently made a version of them for me, and I had to try making them at home. These mixed nuts are salty and spicy, with a faint touch of sweetness.
For this recipe, you can use whatever combinations of nuts that you have on had based on availability and your personal preference. I’ve included a wide range of nuts and seeds in the version listed below.
Ingredients:
½ cup almonds
½ cup cashews
½ cup Macadamia nuts
½ cup walnuts
½ cup pepitas, or green pumpkin seeds
¼ cup nigella seeds
3 Tbsp sunflower seed oil
3 Tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons Kosher salt
1 teaspoon (or two) ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon dried oregano
A few grinds of freshly-ground black pepper, for adding after baking
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350˚F.
Combine all of the ingredients except for the black pepper in a large mixing bowl, and make sure all of the ingredients are evenly distributed.
Spread the mixed and seasoned nuts over a parchment-lined sheet tray.
Bake the nuts at 350˚F for twenty-five minutes, stirring every five minutes to encourage even cooking.
When you are done baking, remove the sheet tray from the oven, and allow the nuts to cool slightly.
Add some grinds of fresh black pepper.
Transfer the cooled, seasoned nuts to an airtight container, and serve during the next week.

…with homemade lemon garlic aioli!
After you make this quick and easy homemade aioli, you may never buy mayonnaise from the store again.
For this recipe, you need a hand-held immersion blender, a narrow container meant for an immersion blender, plus 8 oz (1 cup) of sunflower seed oil, 1 whole egg, 2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard, 1 minced clove of garlic, the juice of 1 lemon, the zest of 1 lemon, and about ½ teaspoon of Kosher salt.
Step # 1: Starting with the oil, add all the ingredients to a tall, narrow container meant for an immersion blender.
Step # 2: Blend using an immersion blender until the ingredients are emulsified, or about ten seconds.
Taste, and add more Kosher salt or lemon juice if desired. Cover and store cold, until ready to use.
For breakfast, try spreading a bit of this homemade aioli on some toasted bread with sliced avocado on top.
You can even blend some avocados and a few sprigs of cilantro into the homemade aioli to create a homemade avocado aioli dip!
